Abstract

This study explored the informal mentoring experience of science teachers on their professional development. Two main questions were: (1) under what circumstances has the informal mentoring relationship of new teachers with experienced teachers been developed? (2)how did their informal experience as mentee during their first years of appointment affect their professional development afterward? The participants were six science teachers from middle schools who experienced an informal mentoring relationship. Data were gathered twice from individual in-depth interviews with each participant. Through the in-depth interviews, the study attempted to illuminate the meaning and effect of the teachers' informal mentoring experience. The results: mentors and mentees in informal mentoring have common characteristics, mentors were experienced veteran teachers and willing to help others including new teachers in difficult situations, and mentee teachers had a positive and diligent attitude toward adjusting and learning which assisted them in drawing help from their senior colleagues. Mentors and mentees in the current study were good fits with each other, so their relationships were based on trust. In addition, informal mentoring was effective on the teachers' professional development in terms of psychological support, learning know-how, developing a positive image of a teacher, and creating a new vision of the science teacher. These findings enable us to infer what the teachers want for their professional development in their first years. Further more, it enables us to expand on how we can help new teachers, and what new teachers can learn from their senior colleges.
