Abstract

This study aims to illuminate the history of the rise and fall of Anju embroidery from the 19th century to the first half of the 20th century, while discussing the history of the imperial family ordering it and the colonial government reviving it. For this, first, this study reviewed the history of the royal family ordering Anju embroidery, a specialty of Py ŏngan-do province, instead of traditional royal embroidery made by court ladies. Second, it was discussed that it was possible through the opening of the railway and the operation of the train that the royal family could order embroidery to Anju in North Korea, not Seoul. Third, it was possible to illuminate the use of embroidery as a new medium and new topics in the task of creating a representation of a modern monarch during the Korean Empire. Fourth, by discussing the political and economic significance of the emperor Sunjong's tour to the northwest, the reason for the rediscovery of Anju embroidery was examined. Fifth, this study sheds light on the history of the decline again after Anju embroidery became popular nationwide after going through Pyŏngyang and Seoul. Through this study, it is discussed why embroidery was used by the imperial family of the Korean Empire in the 19th and 20th centuries, and the meaning of modernization, industrialization, and capitalization that it embraces.
