초록
This study aims to analyze the embroidery works of the Sseugae Joseon Dynasty in terms of materials, colors, patterns, and embroidery techniques. Research and analysis on photographic materials from a variety of sources was performed to derive a theoretical basis, and this was complemented by empirical resources such as museum collections and personal collections. Silk is mainly used for the Sseugae (silk for spring and fall and thin silk for summer) but cotton is used occasionally. Silk threads are commonly used for embroidery thread. Black is most often used as a color of basic cloth, and Obangsek (five colors: blue, red, yellow, black, and white) and neutral colors (lime green, pink, etc.) are also used. Threads of contrasting colors to basic cloth are selected, and gold thread is used to emphasize gorgeous patterns. For embroidery designs of Sseugae, flower patterns and the ten traditional Symbols of Longevity, Subok (long life and happiness), and Danam (many boys) as images of luck are used. Jaryunsu, Pyungsu, Garumsu, Iumsu, Gyigapsu, Solipsu, Uryunsu, Maedupsu, and Ginggumsu are used for embroidery techniques. Among these, Jaryunsu and Pyungsu are the most commonly-used techniques. This study highlights the traditional beauty and elegance of the embroidery works of the Sseugae Joseon Dynasty through a review of traditional embroidery materials, colors, patterns and embroidery techniques.
