Abstract
This study aims to analyze the historical narratives of Mongolian scholars regarding the Great Mongol State-building movement that unfolded in Buryatia, southeast of Lake Baikal. The Provisional Government of the Great Mongol State advocated for the unification of all Mongols, including Inner and Outer Mongolia and Buryatia. However, it was dissolved within a short period due to various reasons, including Japan’s policy shifts as its sponsoring power, internal conflicts, and the non-participation of the Autonomous Mongolian State, Mongolian historical accounts have either excluded the Great Mongol State-building movement from the history of the Mongolian national unification movement or described it negatively, influenced by the official stance of the Bogd Khaan government, an Outer Mongolia-centric perspective, and shifts in domestic and international political circumstances, such as the East-West bloc confrontation. Nevertheless, some researchers have viewed the Great Mongol State-building movement as a combination of foreign influence and the Mongolian aspiration for national unification, evaluating it as part of the continuous national unification movement that began after 1911. The author reviewed the descriptions and problems of the Great Mongolian State-building movement in Mongolian history books published over the past 100 years, and based on this, attempted to help position this movement as a part of the 20th-century Mongolian national unification movement.
