가정의 문화자본과 사회자본이 영어학업성취에 미치는 영향에 대한 잠재성장모형 분석

본 연구에서는 한국교육개발원에서 실시한 ‘한국교육종단연구’(KELS) 자료를 이용하여 가정배경 요인인 부모의 사회경제적지위와 가정의 문화자본 및 사회자본, 사회심리적 변인인 학생의 영어학습태도 및 성취열망과 영어학업성취 초기치 및 향상도 간의 구조적 관계를 분석함으로써 영어학업성취도 초기치와 향상도에 미치는 가정변인과 사회심리적 변인들의 상대적인 영향력은 어떠하며, 이 변인들이 어떠한 경로를 통하여 영어학업성취에 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보고자 하였다. 부모의 사회경제적지위는 가정의 사회자본 및 문화자본과 학생의 사회심리적 요인들에 유의미한 정적 영향을 미치고 있었으며 학생의 영어학업성취의 초기치와 이후 변화에도 직, 간접적으로 지속적인 영향력을 미치고 있었다. 또한 가정의 사회자본은 학생의 영어학업성취 초기치에 직접적인 영향을 미치지는 않았지만 학생의 영어 학업 능력에 대한 긍정적인 인식과 영어학습에 대한 흥미, 학업과 직업에 대한 목표의식을 고양하는 방식으로 간접적인 영향력을 행사하고 있었으며, 영어학업성취 변화율에는 유의미한 정적 효과를 발휘하고 있었다. 한편 학생의 영어학습태도와 성취열망은 영어학업성취에 유의미한 정적 영향을 미치고 있었으며, 부모의 사회경제적지위와 사회자본의 영향을 매개하고 있었다. 그러나 예상과 달리 문화자본은 영어학습태도와 성취열망에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않았으며, 영어학업성취 초기치에 부적인 효과를 미치고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 문화자본과 영어학업성취를 중재하는 제 3의 변인에 대한 후속적인 탐색이 필요함과 동시에 우리나라의 사회적, 교육적 맥락에 적합한 문화자본의 유형에 대한 보다 심도 깊은 탐색이 이루어져야 할 것으로 보인다.

Abstract

This study explores the structural effects of family background factors such as parents' socioeconomic status, parents' cultural capital and family social capital and socio-psychological factors such as students' learning attitude toward English and their educational and occupational aspiration on their English academic achievement and its improvement. This study analyzed 6,908 Korean middle school students using representative data from the 2005-2007 Korean Educational Longitudinal Study(KELS), employing a latent growth model analysis. The result shows that the parents' socioeconomic characteristics(education, occupation, and income) have a significant direct effect on their own cultural capital, family social capital, students' learning attitude toward English, their aspiration, and their English academic achievement. Parents' socioeconomic status has an indirect effect on students's English academic achievement by way of family social capital, students' learning attitude, and their aspiration. Family social capital has indirect effects on students' aspiration and students' initial English achievement, and a direct effect on the further improvement of English achievement although it has no significant direct effect on students' initial English achievement. Socio-psychological factors has a significant effect on English achievement. Students' aspiration has positive direct effects on students' initial English achievement and its further improvement. However, students' learning attitude and aspiration do not mediate the effect of parents' cultural capital(participation in cultural activities and language competencies) on students' English achievement. Furthermore, parents' cultural capital has a negative effect on students' initial English achievement. Further research is requested to examine the variables and indicators of cultural capital relevant to the educational and social context of Korean society.
