Abstract

Despite the historical, social and cultural differences among Asian countries, the cultural capital discussions in the West have considered Asian countries culturally homogeneous. In order to overcome such limitations within previous studies and to examine the cultural differences among Asian countries, this study used the data from the 2008 East Asian Social Survey (EASS) and conducted Frequency Analysis, Logistics Regression Analysis and Correspondence Analysis of the questions that asked about ‘the preferred qualities of friends.' The results can be summarized as follows: First, the Frequency Analysis result showed that Korea, China and Japan all highly thought of the moral qualities of friends, while showing different attitudes towards the cultural qualities of friends. Secondly, the Logistics Regression Analysis result showed that the country variable is statistically significant, exerting influence on eight items about preferred qualities of friends. That is, there is a difference among the three countries - Korea, China and Japan - in terms of the preferred qualities. Thirdly, the results of Correspondence Analysis showed that Korea, China, and Japan all closely corresponded with loyalty, a value related to Confucianism. Yet, Korea showed a closer correspondence with intelligent and cultured, China with wealth and power, and Japan with honest, responsible and warm-hearted. This study is meaningful in that it utilized various methodologies on the study of ‘qualities of friends,' a topic understudied in cultural capital field. Also, the study is meaningful because it identified the difference among Asian countries, rather than the difference between Asian countries and Western countries.
