Abstract

Traditional two-dimensional grit scales (GRIT-O, GRIT-S) consist of consistency of interest and persistence of effort. However, there have been ongoing concerns regarding the measurement issues of these two-dimensional grit scales and their validity in non-individualistic contexts. The present study validated the Triarchic Model of Grit Scale (TMGS), which is suitable for the collectivist Korean context. Unlike the original scales, the TMGS assesses an additional dimension of adaptability to situations. A self-report study involving 942 college students was conducted. Correlations among the TMGS, harmonious passion, life satisfaction, happiness, and depression were all significant. Confirmatory factor analysis supported the three-factor model with excellent fit indices. Finally, after controlling for demographic variables such as gender, age, and grade level, and the effects of conscientiousness and Grit-S, the original grit scale, hierarchical regression analysis revealed that TMGS had a significant incremental explanatory power on life satisfaction. Based on these findings we address the applicability significance and limitations of the validated K-TMGS utilized in this study.
