Abstract

This article explores the characteristics of Mencius' political ideas about mercy and justice. First, we examine the basic meaning of political thinking about mercy and justice and discuss the implications and problems of this. According to our analysis, Mencius' philosophy of "mercy and justice" and "mind" contains tension. The "tension" seen in Mencius thought can be summarized as follows. This tension exists separately in his political ideas about "mercy" and "righteousness", which Mencius himself defined. In terms of "mercy", the political concept of "mercy" basically applies to the monarchs of a new type of state, with two different meanings: One is "the unbearable mind" (based on the concept of "mercy"), which means universality beyond blood as defined by Mencius, and the other is "mercy" inherited from early Confucianism. Mencius' political thoughts showed a direction to transcend and deny the existing regime because of an attempt to restrain the monarch.
