Abstract

Auditory feedback is commonly regarded as the obvious tool for voice control on singing under normal circumstance. But by its very nature, auditory feedback does not provide a reliable means for controlling voice. Listening own voice in controlling voice is primarily the sensory experience that involves both the ear and the body. The sensory systems on the ear and the body provide not only auditory feedback but also proprioceptive feedback. Therefore singers should rely on auditory as well as on proprioceptive feedback to have accurate control of their own voice. The proprioceptive feedback is essentially based on the senses of pallesthetic(vibratory), kinesthetic(muscular) and vestibular(balance or equilibrium) system. The proprioceptive feedback provides singers with precise landmarks for controlling their emission. This means of control is more reliable than auditory feedback in which the voice is substantially modified by the acoustics of the environment. Perhaps what Lamperti referred to when he said “Do not listen to yourself sing! Feel yourself sing!” is the need to use not only ears but also body.
