This paper presents two innovative retrieval methods of searching exact or similar music sources in a music database. The first method has been developed during the establishment of a music database of modern East Asia, called the EMDB (Ewha Music Database) and it is called “Music Search Method/System Based on Music Incipit.” The other method is being developed while the new research project is being carried out by the Ewha Music Research Institute. Both methods are highly useful to investigate musical changes and relation of music from one another in a highly complex music culture contents of East Asia. Thus they can allow us to understand much music transmission and music route within and beyond the region of East Asia.
