Abstract
This paper examines the textual form and mensuration of J. S. Bach's Cantata 77, focusing on the third and fifth movements. By taking Crist's argument on the textual form in Bach's cantatas and Franklin's argument on fermatas in Bach's multi-movement works as a musical device for analysing the mensuration, this paper seeks for the interpretative meanings of this work. Based on both Crist's and Franklin's arguments, the first chapter analyses the textual form presented in both soprano aria (third movement) and alto aria (fifth movement). In the second part, the mensurational relation of these arias is investigated by analyzing the use of fermatas in the entire Cantata. Analysing textual and temporal aspects altogether, this paper argues that although both arias have the same textual form, they are set to different musical frameworks, which originates from Bach's consideration for the mensurational relation between movements.
