초록

이 연구는 본 윌리엄스의 〈토머스 탤리스 테마에 대한 판타지아〉의 음악학적 수용에 대한 연구이다. 이 작품은 역사적으로 예술음악 개념과 대립관계를 형성해 온 과거 영국 음악과 영국 민요의 요소를 포용함으로써 자연성을 획득하고, 파스토랄 어법과 그림 같은 자연이라는 영국적 풍경 이념과의 친화력을 통해 그 자연성을 구체화한다. 이 작품의 자연성은 작품의 주된 정체성으로서 계보와 모방적 경쟁의 관점에서 판단되는 작품의 예술성을 압도하는데, 이는 예술음악 중심의 서양음악사 담론에서 이 작품이 주변화되는 데 중대한 요인으로 작용한다. 자연성과 예술성의 독특한 조합으로 인해 음악적 정전의 경계에 머무를 수밖에 없었던 이 작품은 음악적 정전의 정당성을 뒷받침하는 천재 개념에 대한 비판적 관점을 제공하고, 음악학의 편향을 드러내는 대안적 존재 방식을 제시한다.

Abstract

This paper is about the musicological reception of Vaughan Williams’ Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis. The work acquires naturality by embracing the musical past of England and the English folk song idiom, which have historically been opposed to the notion of art music. The various features of the pastoral, together with the affinity between the work and the ideal of the picturesque that has governed English taste in landscape, concretize the naturality of the work. Naturality, as the main identity of the work, exceeds the level of its artistic achievement that has traditionally been gauged in terms of cultural lineage and emulation, which contributes to the work’s marginalization within the discourse of history of Western music. Although the rather singular combination of natural and artistic aspects of the work has prevented the work’s full inclusion in the musical canon, the work still provides critical insights into the nature of the genius concept that justifies the existence of the musical canon, and suggests an alternative way of being that responds to the significant biases of the current musicological discourse.
