Abstract

This thesis considers discussions of musical fantasy based on the treatises produced during the Baroque period. Fantasy in these treatises shared the conception of fantasy in literary and visual arts, that is an vivid expression as if visualized, and technically implied counterpoint and improvisation. Early descriptions of fantasia and the stylus phantasticus manifest the perception of ‘freedom’ from (or deliberate breach of) the conventional rules, reflecting the increasing interest in emotional expression and communication and in artistic license. This freedom developed along with the growing artistic urge towards variety and individualized expression throughout the Seventeenth Century. Therefore the emphasis is transferred from the composer’s ability to command the rules of counterpoint, which represented the immutable cosmological order and perfection around 1600, to imagination and improvisation. Such aesthetic standards of a certain era, from which any sense of freedom or deviation could be conceived, underline the distinctive character of musical fantasy of a period.
