재즈는 논쟁과 이견을 끊임없이 형성했던 장르다. 장르의 본고장이라고 여겨지는 미국에서조차 재즈는 클래식 음악에 견줄만한 이색적인 음악이자 흑인에 대한 편견에서 비롯된 이질적 소음이라는 이견을 낳았고 이러한 대립 양상은 오랜 시간 지속되었다. 흥미로운 점은 이러한 재즈의 양가성이 20세기 초 한국, 중국, 일본, 필리핀 등 여러 지역에서 공통적으로 나타난다는 것이다. 이 논문은 재즈의 물리적 소리현상과 함께 장르에 대한 평가, 가치체계 또한 초국적으로 전해지고 공유되었던 것임을 살펴보는 데 목적을 둔다. 특별히 주목하고자 하는 것은 재즈에 대한 부정적 평가와 선입견이 재즈의 음향적 특성이 아닌 인종주의적 선입견에서 비롯된 것이라는 점이다. 이글은 녹음기술과 교통의 발달이 미국의 재즈 음악을 경험하는 장을 마련하는 한편, 제국주의와 식민주의가 재즈와 관련된 인종적 선입견을 강화하고 이를 더 많은 지역에서 공유하는 통로가 되었다는 점을 탐색하고자 한다. 이를 위해 미국, 중국, 일본, 한국의 재즈에 대한 주요 문헌 및 연구 사례를 살펴보고 논의의 범위를 한국으로 좁혀, 한국에서 인종 개념이 등장한 자료를 검토하여 재즈에 대한 한국에서의 논의 역시 다른 지역과 크게 다르지 않았던 이유를 당시 팽배했던 인종에 대한 편협한 시각에서 분석한다.
Abstract
Jazz has continuously generated disparate disputes and arguments. Even in the United States, where the genre jazz was born, the controversial ideas between the new modern sound and primitive noise performed by blacks have continued. Those ambivalent ideas are also found in Korea, China, Japan, and Philippines during the early 20th century. This article examines not only physical sound of jazz but also the ambivalent characteristics of jazz that are shared in those countries. This study especially focuses on the negative responses which emphasize aspects of dance and rhythm connected to jazz are driven by biases on the blacks. In so doing, this article shows that recording and transportation technology development help to distribute the new modern sound, and that imperialism and colonialism reinforces and shares those biases. To do so, I examine a few important scholarly works of the USA, China, and Japan, and investigate the prejudice on jazz was also found in Korea. I analyze the commonly shared ideas which were driven by the prejudice on the blacks.
