Abstract
This article examines the Department of Music at Ewha College as a historically significant institutional space where the potential of female musical subjects was both imagined and realized. Focusing on key examples such as The Collection of Korean Folk Songs for Chorus (1931), The Collection of Femme Lieder (1932), Songs of Ewha (1936), and the Ewha Glee Club’s performance practices, the study analyzes how musical creation and articulation by women were structured and enacted within and through the institutional boundaries of the time. Situated at the intersection of Christian values, national identity, cultural refinement, and professional specialization, Ewha’s early music education navigated multiple layers of expectation and regulation while also fostering unique modes of expression. This paper further explores how these early practices were carried forward through the institutional development of the College of Music and considers how contemporary Ewha continues to inherit and reinterpret this legacy of gendered musical agency.
