Abstract
This paper revisits the concept of musical authorship in light of the structural transformation in music creation driven by generative AI. Focusing on the K-pop industry-where co-creation and collaborative production are deeply institutionalized-it examines how authorial agency is redistributed among human and non-human actors, including AI-based composition tools. K-pop’s globally networked work flows and elaborate credit systems exemplify collective creativity. The integration of generative AI accelerates this shift, revealing new forms of distributed authorship that challenge traditional notions of the solitary author or artistic autonomy. Drawing on theories from literary studies, Cultural-sociology, and popular music studies, the study also considers legal and technological implications. Through K-pop case analyses, the paper explores how musical authorship is being reconfigured and negotiated within emerging industrial, cultural, and algorithmic frameworks, calling for updated theoretical and institutional responses to sustain creative practices.
