Abstract
This study aims to examine the patterns of viewer responses and topic interests reflected in YouTube comments on videos uploaded by the K-Heritage Channel, a public platform managed by the Korean government. In contrast to previous studies that primarily relied on producer-centered perspectives or traditional surveys, this research adopts a user-centric approach by analyzing user-generated content (UGC)-specifically YouTube comments to uncover how digital audiences engage with and emotionally respond to cultural heritage content. The dataset consists of 73,537 comments extracted from 2,115 videos published between June 2010 and December 2024. After preprocessing, a total of 67,826 comments were retained for analysis. The methodological framework includes keyword frequency analysis, TF-IDF weighting, and BERTopic-based topic modeling, supplemented by an analysis of comment volume by content playlist. As a result of the analysis, viewers expressed a variety of responses that went beyond simple information acquisition, including admiration for the beauty of traditional culture, emotional support, and expressions of cultural pride. Keywords such as “cultural heritage,” “support,” “artisan,” and “beautiful” showed high frequencies, while adjective-type keywords highlighted a strong tendency toward positive sentiment and impression-based evaluations. In the TF-IDF analysis, high-scoring terms such as “beautiful,” “thankful,” “support,” “nation,” and “amazing” indicated strong emotional engagement and empathy toward the content. Using BERTopic, the study extracted ten major topics, which formed two distinct clusters: one reflecting an appreciation for traditional cultural values, and the other centered on emotional participation and responses to K-content collaborations. The findings also revealed differentiated patterns of viewer reactions depending on content format and theme, particularly in videos featuring traditional artisans, archaeological sites, K-POP collaborations, and ASMR-style presentations. This study demonstrates that digital cultural heritage content on YouTube not only delivers information but also promotes affective engagement and identity formation among viewers. The findings offer both theoretical and practical implications, serving as a valuable resource for the development of data-driven, audience- centered content strategies and cultural heritage promotion policies in the digital age.
