Abstract
During the reign from muyeolwang(武烈王, 654~661) to Hyegongwang(惠恭王, 765~780) is called Joongdae(中代, the mid-era) in Silla history. The late in the 7th century of the early Joongdae is more noteworthy as the former and latter terms of the Unification of the Three Kingdoms. This study is willing to look into the discussion in the world of Buddhism about ruling a nation of the King in this time, focusing on Wonhyo(元曉, 617~686) and Gyeongheung(憬興, ?~681~?) who were the representative high priests(高僧) at that time. The Royal family during Joongdae of Silla believed in Buddhism and the Kings were true followers. There was Naewon(內院) as an extra temple in the palace and the sovereigns had invited high priests and heard Buddhist sermon or wanted political consultation from them. The persons who made the most outstanding contributions in the Unification of the Three Kingdoms such as Kim Yu-sin(金庾信), Kim Yang-do(金良圖), Kim Cheon-jon(金天尊) and Jukchirang(竹旨郞) adhered to Buddhism. Thus, the Royal family and the nobilities had actively faith in and supported Buddhism in the mid-era of Silla. Therefore, Buddhism not only contributed to unite the people of the Three Kingdoms directly after the Unification but also enormously influenced on politics those days. The activities of Wonhyo and Gyeongheung among many high priests in the early Joongdae were especially remarkable. They were as the best learned priest(學僧) at that time, Wonhyo wrote 100 species of books and Gyeongheung left 47 sorts of writings. Also, they had special relation with the Royal family of Silla, for example, Wonhyo had married Princess Yoseok(瑤石) who was the daughter of muyeolwang and Gyeongheung had frequented the palace as Guksa(國師, the Most Reverend Priest) in the reign of Sinmunwang(神文王, 681~692) and provided various consultations to the Royal Court. Consequently, the Royal family of Silla seems to be affected by them considerably. A variety of Sutras state about political ideas in Buddhism, particularly, Suvarna-prabhāsottamasūtra( 金光明經), Bodhisattva-gocara-upāya-visaya-vikurvāna-nirdeśa-sūtra(薩遮尼乾子經) and Rājadharma-nyaya-sastra(王法正理論) are detailing on that ; those Sutras especially include faults and moralities of a king among the contents on governing a country as a ruler. Most of learned priests value Suvarna-prabhāsottama-sūtra, in particular, Wonhyo wrote two spicies of commentaries and Gyeongheung wrote those of five on that. It said that Wonhyo and Gyeongheung understood governing a country of a king based on Churaewanggyoung(出愛王經) ─ that is Rājadharma-nyaya-sastra. They paid attention to ten sorts of king's faults and Gyeongheung also gave warning ruler's vice by quoting this contents from Rājadharma-nyaya-sastra. They probably watched this phrase, “If a king commits an error, the people won't obey his orders with respect although he has a big warehouse, many aides and numerous soldiers.” Wonhyo and Gyeongheung cited Rājadharma-nyaya-sastra into their books several times. Yeumchiwangpoom(詣嚴熾王品) and Wangronpoom(王論品) of this Sutra also explain many reasons which a king must maintain. Suvarna-prabhāsottama-sūtra and Bodhisattva-gocara-upāya -visaya-vikurvāna-nirdeśa-sūtra say that a monarch is a parents of a people. And both Sutras also say that, “if public sentiment has unrest, the nation will be in an extremely precarious position soon because a king should regard the people as the nation”, Wonhyo paid attention to this phrase. The Sutras such as Suvarna-prabhāsottama-sūtra and Bodhisattva-gocara-upāya-visaya-vikurvāna -nirdeśa-sūtra and so on, like this, mentioned the concrete contents about political activities of a king in reality. Therefore, Wonhyo and Gyeongheung who watched those Sutras had obvious cognizance of political ideas in Buddhism, especially about ruling a nation of the king. Even if their commentaries on Suvarna-prabhāsottama-sūtra are not in existence, we can know that they were deeply understanding on governing a nation of the ruler ; using Bodhisattva-gocara-upāyavisaya- vikurvāna-nirdeśa-sūtra and Rājadharma-nyaya-sastra and so forth, through only the fragmentary scripts which were quoted in their other writings. It seems difficult that Silla's Royal family in the early Joongdae who had special connection with Wonhyo and Gyeongheung didn't be influence by their Buddhist political ideas.
