A Contrastive Study of Existential Constructions in Korean, Chinese and Japanese: From a Typological Perspective

While there is only a single existential verb ‘iss-’ in Korean (apart from the honorific form ‘kyeysi-’), Chinese has two existential verbs ‘有(yǒu)’ and ‘在(zài)’, which are distinguished on the basis of definiteness/information structure. Japanese seems, on the surface, to distinguish the two existential verbs ‘aru’ and ‘iru’ based on animacy. However, when viewed from the perspective of constructions, Korean and Japanese, as well as Chinese, align two kinds of existential constructions on the basis of information structure. These facts suggest the importance of the concept of construction.
