삼국통일전쟁이 치열하게 전개된 7세기에 신라는 북쪽의 고구려와 수십 차례의 군사적 대결을 펼쳤다. 삼국사기는 당시 양국 사이에 9차례의 공방전이 있었던 것으로 전하지만, 기록의 누락 가능성 등을 감안하면 실제 전쟁은 더욱 자주 벌어졌을 것이다. 삼국사기에 전하는 자료를 통해 볼 때, 이 시기 양국 간의 군사적 대결은 주로 고구려의 공세로 일관되었다고 판단된다.고구려의 침략은 주로 한강 이북 지역의 신라 성들을 대상으로 하여 이루어졌다고 자료에 나타나는데, 그에 못지 않게 동해안 방면에서도 강한 압박이 있었을 것으로 추측된다. 신라는 서쪽의 백제의 공격을 이겨내기도 어려운 상황에서 그보다 더 강한 군사력을 보유한 고구려의 군사적 압력까지 받게 되어, 국망의 위기에까지 내몰리고 있었던 것으로 판단되며, 그 위기를 타개하기 위해 바다를 건너 중국 세력에게 다가가 그 힘을 빌리려는 외교 전략을 구사한 것은 가히 필연적이었다고 말할 수 있다.
Abstract
In the 7th century, there were severe wars among the three ancient kingdoms of Korea. Especially Silla which was located in the southeastern area of the peninsula fought against Koguryo several tens of times. Samguksagi tells us that Koguryo had the initiative in the war.Koguryo is said to have attacked the castles of Silla mainly in the northern basin of Han river. And it is believed that there was very strong military pressure on the eastern coastal area of the peninsula as well. To make matters worse, at that time, Silla was in the big trouble due to Paekche's persistent invasions. Silla had to ask military aids of some other countries. So it was inevitable that Silla entered into the military alliance with Tang dynasty of China which had the intention to conquer Koguryo.
