Abstract
Korean consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for GM food is studied in an experimental auction market. A simultaneous second-price auction is designed to elicit the complete distribution of WTP differences between four alternatives according to the GM food labeling system. The results show that the estimated WTPs for ‘GM food included’ and ‘GM food included possible’ are relatively low and the estimated WTP for ‘non-GM food’ is very high. Results also indicate that the market segmentation between ‘GM food’ and ‘non-GM food’ is relatively possible. The results of this paper could be an important information for the stable establishment and efficient operation of the GM food labeling system in Korea.
