초록

본 논문은 초등 및 중등학생을 대상으로 한 수학과 과학의 국제 시험의 표준화된 성적으로 각 국가의 교육의 질적 성과를 측정하고 이것을 결정하는 중요한 학교요인, 가정요인, 개인 요인들이 무엇인지 계량분석을 통해 살펴 보고 있다. 분석 결과 교사 일인당 학생 비율과 학생 일인당 공교육비 지출액은 교육의 질에 영향을 미치는 매우 중요한 학교투입요인인 것으로 나타났다. 또 각국 성인의 평균 소득, 교육 수준과 평균 IQ도 자녀들의 학교 교육의 성과에 중요한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 인적자본의 양적인 수준보다는 질적인 수준을 향상시키기 위해서는 학교교육에 대한 투입을 늘이는 것이 중요하다.

Abstract

This paper investigates the determinants of educational quality by using an updated panel data set from Lee and Barro (2001), which includes various educational input and output measures for a broad number of countries. The results obtained from the estimation of education production function show that students' average IQ, income and education of parents, family resources, and school resources are closely related to student outcomes, as measured by international test scores in mathematics and science. Our findings suggest that improving educational quality at the primary and secondary level, and probably at tertiary level too, necessitates increasing school resources to improve public educational spending per pupil as well as reducing the teacher-pupil ratio in the classroom.
