A Historical Study on the Words with the Meaning of gyeodeurangi

The purpose of this article is to explain the process of form and meaning change about reconstructed form ‘*kyʌtʌk[腋]’ of gyeodeurangi(armpit). A form of gyeodeurangi was ‘겯(/kyət/)’ in the Late Middle Korean. And it’s a meaning was ‘armpit’. But a meaning of ‘겯(/kyət/)’ changed as follows: ‘the armpit > the armpit, under the armpit > the armpit, under the armpit, between under the armpit and upper ribs. In other words, the meaning of gyeodeurangi in Korean Central dialect has undergone a meaning extension. And for reasonable explanation about form change of gyeodeurangi, I reconstruct ‘*kyʌtʌk’. A explanation about the form changing process of gyeodeurangi is based on reconstructed form ‘*kyʌtʌk’. Main factors related the changing of form are as follows: ① phonological change: k-palatalization, change of *yʌ, *tʌk( > tk) > t, *tʌk > tʌh > th > tʰ, *tʌk > tk > k’/ ② type of attached suffixes: -ang(i), -i, -ak.
