초록

In this paper we investigate the typological features of the Imperative Conditional Construction, the construction in which an imperative sentence form functions as a conditional clause. This type of constructions have been reported to exist all around the world. We compare the developmental stages of this construction cross-linguistically, and try to explain the nature and origin of it. Three things are discovered in this research. First, the Imperative Conditional Construction in each language is at one of the various developmental stages, and the stage the language has reached can be examined with a prototypical method. Second, the relation between the typical imperative sentence and the Imperative Conditional Construction is polysemous. Many researchers approached the question in a monosemic view, but their explanations have shortcomings respectively. Third, the imperative sentence form used as an 'ironic intimidative speech act' is one of the trigger points of the diachronic meaning extension.
