초록
The present paper investigates the characteristics of the Korean sentences of Early Modern Korean corresponding to the Chinese zhe (者)-construction. In Classical Chinese, zhe is a polyfunctional morpheme (or word) that plays a role as a nominalizer, a relativizer, topicalizer, and so on. In this paper, I first classify the zhe-constructions in Classical Chinese by their surface functions. Subsequently, I gather the Korean translations from seventeenth and eighteenth century, divide them into the zhe-construction types established above, and examine the variations in Korean translation with frequency analyses. According to the result, the Korean translations of zhe-construction also show diversity and bear interesting variations. The comparison between seventeenth and eighteenth century does not show a significant differences in most of the cases. However, I can find some constructional changes including the change in the nominalizing suffixes, the change of subordinating function of zhe, the functional change in relativizer zhe which might be induced by Korean-to-Chinese interference, and so on. Last but not least, a variety of Korean constructions are used for the Chinese post-nominal relative clause in order to compensate the word order discrepancy between Chinese and Korean.
