초록
This paper presents a relevance-theoretic account of paraphrase (identified as reformulation). Against the view that paraphrase should be defined as an equivalent or synonymous relation, I agree with the proposal under the relevance theory that reformulation is based on interpretive resemblance. The analysis is carried out by employing Murillo’s (2004) classification, which consists of different functions: explicit meaning functions (i.e., the recovery of logical form and explicatures) and implicit meaning functions (i.e., the recovery of implicated premises and implicated conclusions). In conclusion, reformulation markers help hearers/ readers understand more easily what should be communicated, acting at different levels of the process of utterance interpretation.
