Abstract

Fox nut (E. ferox) remains recovered from the Wolseong moat suggest that this aquatic plant may have been used as ritual offerings in royal-level ceremonies of Silla. Medieval ritual texts from China and Korea frequently record qianren (검인, 芡仁), the seeds of Euryale ferox, as important sacrificial items, supporting their symbolic and ceremonial significance. Approximately 20,000 seeds were identified in the fifth~sixth-century deposits of the Wolseong moat, and additional remains were recovered from the garden wonji (苑池) at the Baedong 100-15 site―interpreted as a site with possible state-level ritual functions―dating to the Three Kingdoms through Unified Silla periods. Drawing on these archaeological and textual data, this study examines the relationship between Silla state rituals and fox nut, with particular focus on the possibility that this aquatic plant was selected as an offering in agrarian rites that emphasized water symbolism and prayers for prosperity. Fox nut has long been valued as food and medicine, serving as an important aquatic resource since the Paleolithic. Within the Silla royal capital, it appears to have been cultivated in managed waterside environments and functioned as a multifaceted resource connecting ritual, subsistence, and landscape aesthetics. The cultivation of fox nut in the Wolseong moat and wonji can thus be understood as part of an integrated ecological management system aimed at ensuring a stable supply of ritual offerings, securing food and medicinal reserves, and harmonizing palace-garden landscapes.
