조선의 누정(樓亭) 문화에 대한 기호학적 이해

본 논문은 누정(樓亭) 문화는 누정이라는 건축물과 그 건축물을 건축하고 사용했던 성리학자들, 그리고 건축물과 성리학자들이 속했던 자연 및 인문환경을 통해 생성되는 것이라는 인식에 기초하여 누정, 사람, 환경 모두를 포괄하는 시각을 모색하기 위해 찰스 샌더스 퍼스(Charles Sanders Peirce, 1839~1914)의 기호학(記號學, semiotics)을 활용하였다. 이러한 인식 하에 본 연구는 누정을 기호로 보고, 그 기호의 대상이 ‘환경 속의 사람’임을 성리학자 최립(崔岦, 1539~1612, 자: 立之, 호: 簡易)의 누정기, 특히 그의 「열승정기(閱勝亭記)」를 중심으로 논의하였다. 최립에게 누정은 기본적으로 어떠한 자연적 혹은 정신적 환경(상황) 속에 놓인 누정의 건립자(사용자)를 의미하였으며 이러한 그의 사유가 기호학적 사유로 이해될 수 있음을 논의하였다. 또한 최립의 다른 누정기와 예술 작품에 대한 인식의 분석을 통해서도 그의 사유가 기호학적으로 이해될 수 있음을 논의하였다. 더 나아가 본 연구는 조선시대 성리학자들의 누정 문화가 기호학적 접근에 의해 더 잘 이해될 수 있음을 주장하였다.
Abstract
This study is based on the perspective that the Nu-jeong (樓亭) culture of the Joseon dynasty was formed by the following key factors: 1) Nu-jeong buildings; 2) Neo-Confucian scholars who built and used Nu-jeong; 3) the natural and humanistic environments to which Neo-Confucian scholars belonged. To take into consideration Nu-jeong, builders and users, and the environments altogether, this paper makes use of the semiotics of Charles Sanders Peirce (1839~1914). This paper views a Nu-jeong building as a sign, or “representamen” in the manner of Peirce and the object of Nu-jeong as the builder or user in the natural and humanistic environments.’ This paper analyses the writings of a Neo-Confucian scholar, Choe Lip (崔岦, 1539~1612, pen name: kanyi 簡易) as a good example to vindicate the perspective of this paper. Choe Lip’s understanding of Nu-jeong can be interpreted as a ‘sign’ signifying the builder and user of the building located in a certain natural or mental environment. This paper discusses that Choe Lip’ understanding of musical and pictorial works can be better understood through a semiotic approach.
