Abstract

The Legend of Empress Singong and the Japanese Conception toward Korea The legend of Empress Singong’s expedition to Silla, a story written in the ancient time and passed from generation to generation, has turned into an important conception affecting Japanese relations with foreign countries. The heroic story, made when the old Japan had hostile relationship with Silla, has been particularly used as a political ideology by the ruling class whenever Japan faces a harsh international situation. In the 8th century, when Japan was in competition with Silla, the ruling class emphasized it’s superiority over Silla referring to the legend of Empress Singong. When Mongol Empire invaded Japan, Empress Singong even became an object of religious worship and the ceremony worshiping her spirits was held at that time. At the ceremony Japanese prayed her to help Japan to defeat the foreign enemy. In the Imjinwaeran(the Korean- Japanese War in the End of 16th Century), the legend was used as an ideology to justify invasion of Chosun and inspire the Japanese soldiers to fight for their country’s victory. During the period of Japanese colonization in Korea, it was also taught to the colonized as a part of domination policy. The legend of Empress Singong is a historical entity which has rendered Japanese a significant ideological basis in shaping their superiority to Koreans. Their sense of superiority to Korea, often shown as their disdain toward the Koreans living in Japan in particular, is a primary product of the contemporary Japanese history education highlighting such human made heroic stories like the legend of Empress Singong.
