Abstract
Noh ‘Hakozaki’ of Zeami is a work of taking Empress Jingu who was not only a mythic hero of Shilla conquest but also an icon of exterminating invasion of allied forces of Koryeo and Mongolian army as main character. In addition, Hakozaki shrine as its stage has been remembered as a religious holy place of making the enemy surrender from the past. Zeami created this Noh in order to glorify political achievement of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who suppressed Kyushu. However, Noh ‘Hakozaki’ took just a motif that Empress Jingu buried Buddhism scriptures under the pine tree of Hakozaki while completely excluding not only such political objective but also a firm traditional narrative that such myth was a goddess myth of conquest and patriotism. Resultantly, Hakozaki shrine was embodied as a land of redemption and peace being filled with voice of Buddha and its appeared goddess was resurrected not only as beautiful goddess dancing under the moonlight but also as merciful Buddha helping sattva. Like this, in Noh ‘Hakozaki’, inconsistency between materials being handled in the work and its pursuing topic is extremely represented but it did not invite artistic breakdown. Such gap rather clearly highlighted pacifism and supreme principle of art being pursued by Zeami’s Noh while scenery filled with mystery of Hakozaki beach and merciful statue of goddess were harmonized through beautiful writing style of Zeami. As a conclusion, it was mentioned that succession of Empress Jingu who is said to be Shilla Dynasty king, Amenohiboko and origin narrative of Jeami family who is said to be descendant of Shilla derived Hata clan could provide an interesting perspective in understanding pacifism of Noh ‘Hikojaki’.
