민속문화의 현재와 전승론 재고–일본 민속학의 ‘포크롤리즘’ 검토를 통하여–

본고의 목적은 현대사회라는 문맥 속에서 민속학 연구의 방향을 가늠하고 존립 의의를 재조명해 보는데 있다. 최근 민속문화를 둘러싼 주요 논의들 중 특히 눈에 띄는 것은 ‘지역(사회)’과 ‘창출’의 문제이다. 그러나 민속학 연구에서 ‘지역’은 핵심적·기본적 개념인데 반해, ‘창출’은 현대사회라는 동시대성을 반영한 비교적 새로운 술어라는 점에 차이가 있다. 그러나 민속문화 연구의 지평을 확대시키기 위해서는 이 두 문제를 함께 검토해야 할 것이다. 본고에서는 민속문화의 현재적 문맥을 이론적으로 검토하기 위해 일본 민속학의 포크롤리즘 논의에 초점을 맞추어 ‘창출’되는 민속을 ‘전승’이라는 관점에서 민속학이 어떻게 대상화할 수 있는지 고찰해보았다. 그리고 이 논의를 구체화하기 위해 일본 신사의례 중의 하나인 ‘히타치노쿠니 소샤궁 대제’와 새로운 지역축제로서 ‘서머 페스타 IN 이시오카’의 두 사례를 비교 검토하였다. 포크롤리즘 논의에 입각하여 이상의 두 사례를 비교 분석하였을 때, 고전적 민속학 연구에서 정통성을 부여 받던 신사의례 소샤궁 대제와 가짜 민속으로 비판 받던 페스타 모두 동일한 포크롤리즘적 현상임을 이해할 수 있다. 그러나 여기서 주의해야 할 점은 전승의 지속과 단절이라는 측면, 즉 도중에 막을 내린 페스타와는 달리 소샤궁 대제의 전승이 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다는 사실이다. 소샤궁 대제의 지속적 전승 문제는 민속문화와 전승모체로서의 지역사회 간의 관계를 절대시하는 기왕의 민속학적 관점이 아닌, 전승주체로서의 지역사회 구성원들의 의식 및 실천에 대한 분석의 필요성을 함의하고 있다.
Abstract
Where should folklore studies go and why is it to be done in contemporary society? To find critical clues to these essential questions, I focus my attention on two issues-‘locality’ or ‘local community’ and ‘creation’-related to discussions on present folkloric phenomena. However, it is necessary to perceive the difference between two issues; one has been a key and elemental term and the other is appeared as a new one in folklore studies. In spite of this difference, two issues should be discussed together to broaden the range of academic folklore research. This paper investigates folklorism which has been argued in Japanese folklore studies to illustrate theologically the present context of folk culture. Additionally the creation of new folk culture is analyzed from the point of view of transmission which has been the key terminology in folklore studies. From the examples examined here–‘Hitachi-no-kuni Sōsha shrine’s main festival’ and ‘Summer Festa IN Ishioka’–, it could be argued that the shrine ritual recognized as a genuine folk culture and the invented local festival as a spurious in the orthodox folklore research are under the same context of folklorism. There is, however, significant difference between two cases from the perspective of continuity of folk culture: Compared to Summer Festa, shrine’s main festival has been transmitted over generations in spite of a great deal of difficulties. This comparative study shows that continuity of folk culture is of relevance to interpretations and practices of actors–the locals–as a subject of transmission, not the locality as it is.
