Abstract

The roots of Korean studies are Korean language and Korean history. Thus, earlier in the field of Korean language, dictionaries have been compiled. However, it was very late that dictionaries and encyclopedias of Korean history were published. According to researches till now, ChoesinJoseonYeoksajirisajeon (the New Dictionary of History and Geography of Joseon: 1933) compiled by Sato Taneji was the earliest. After the Korean independence, Choi Namseon attempted to compile the dictionary of history, but he did not complete it. Since then, several dictionaries of Korean history have been compiled. The earliest dictionary of Korean history after the Korean independence was Ryu Jiok’s Gichoguksasajeon (the Basic Dictionary of National History: 1949). Then, Guksasajeon (the Dictionary of National History: 1957) and Hanguksasajeon (the Dictionary of Korean History: 1959) followed it. The earliest full-scale dictionary of Korean history was Yi Hongjik’s Guksadaesajeon (the Great Encyclopedia of National History: 1962·1963) in two volumes. The several reprinted and revised editions of this encyclopedia were published till JeungboSaeGuksasajeon (the Revised New Encyclopedia of National History: 1999). Several editions of Guksabaekgwasajeon (the Encyclopedia of National Hostory: 1975) supervised by Ryu Hongryeol has been published. Recently, Kyohak Publishing Co. Ltd. compiled and published Hanguksadaesajeon (the Great Encyclopedia of Korean History) in ten volumes. In North Korea, Ryeoksasajeon (the Dictionary of History) was published in 1971, and the revised second edition from 1999 to 2004. In the 20th century dictionaries of Korean history have been continually published. Earlier reference works of Korean history began from concise dictionaries and then they have been gradually enlarged to vast encyclopedias. From now on, it is needed to publish specialized encyclopedias within academic circles and for online.
