조선시대 『수호지』의 친족어 번역 연구

이 글의 목적은 조선시대 『수호지』의 친족어 번역에 나타나는 특징을 밝히는 데 있다. 구체적으로 친족호 칭어, 친족지칭어, 친족 고유명사의 대역어를 대상으로 당시 두 언어를 번역할 때 나타나는 특성을 고찰하는 대조 언어학적 연구이다. 명나라 시기에 형성된 고전 소설 『수호지』는 중국에서 큰 인기를 얻었으며, 다양한 판본과 비평본이 생산되었다. 조선시대에 이 작품은 한반도에 들어와 광범위한 독자층을 확보하고, 한글 번 역본도 생산되었다. 번역본은 당시 두 나라의 언어 교류에 대한 귀중한 자료이다. 그중 이글에서는 친족어에 주목했다. 『수호지』에서 나타난 친족어는 매우 다양하다. 호칭어와 지칭어는 사람들이 경험하는 일상의 교제 와 유대의 성격을 나타내며, 언어 교류에 필수적이다. 사회호칭어(지칭어)보다 친족호칭어(지칭어)가 상대적으 로 안정적이고 시대가 바뀌어도 급격히 변화하지 않는다. 한국과 중국은 혈연을 중시하는 종법제도가 있었기 때문에 두 언어에 모두 풍부한 친족어 체계가 있다. 이것은 『수호지』 친족어 번역에 큰 도움을 주었다. 조선시 대에 이루어진 『수호지』 친족어 번역은 음역, 직역, 의역 방법을 사용하고 자국화와 이국화 전략을 모두 채택 했다. 그러나 친족어와 같은 문화적 단어를 번역할 때 완벽하게 번역하는 것은 거의 불가능하다. 그 결과 중국 어 친족어를 한국어로 바꿀 때 일부 문화정보가 유출되거나 늘어날 수밖에 없었다.
Abstract
The classical Chinese novel Water Margin achieved substantial popularity in China, leading to the production of a multitude of editions and critical commentaries. During the Joseon era, this literary work made its way to the Korean peninsula, capturing a broad readership, and translations of Korean version were subsequently produced. The present study focuses on the kinship terms present in the Water Margin translations from the Joseon period. The range of terms of address within Water Margin is notably diverse. These terms signify interpersonal bonds in daily interactions and are an essential component of linguistic communication. Kinship terms, compared to social terms of address, tend to be relatively stable and are less susceptible to rapid changes over time. Because both Korea and China had patriarchal system that values bloodlines, both languages boast intricate systems of kinship terminology. This shared cultural foundation significantly aided the translation of kinship terms in Water Margin during the Joseon period. An analysis of these translations from the Joseon era reveals the employment of transliteration, literal translation, and interpretative translation methods, combined with both domestication and foreignization strategies. Achieving a flawless translation of cultural terms, such as kinship terms, is inherently challenging. In the course of translating Chinese terms of address into Korean, certain cultural nuances are inevitably either omitted or amplified.
