Abstract
The color words ‘靑’, ‘綠’, and ‘藍’ in ancient China go beyond simple colors and carry social meanings. ‘靑’ initially started as the name of a mineral and developed into a color word including indigo and green. ‘綠’ originated from the color of a plant’s leaves and gradually became an independent color word. ‘藍’ originated from a plant used as a dye and later expanded into a color word referring to indigo. In this paper, we examine the social customs and perceptions of ancient China through the expansion of meanings and changes in social status of the color words ‘靑’, ‘綠’, and ‘藍’. The changes in color words reflect socio-cultural factors according to the times, and through this, we examine the appearance of ancient Chinese society and social perceptions.
