Abstract
This study provides a comprehensive examination of the general types, structures, meanings, and functions of quotation sentences in modern Mongolian and conducts a comparative analysis with quotation sentences in Korean based on this. A quotation sentence in modern Mongolian, like in Korean, refers to a sentence that conveys and expresses not only the words or writings of others but also the speaker’s own words, writings, or thoughts to others. This method of expression, like Korean quotations, can be broadly divided into two types. One is the “direct quotation” method, which conveys the original text or utterance exactly as it was, and the other is the “indirect quotation” method, which conveys the content indirectly by partially modifying the sentence structure from the speaker’s perspective. Accordingly, sentences constructed using these two methods are classified as “direct quotation sentences” and “indirect quotation sentences” respectively. This study aimed to summarize the characteristics and types of quotation sentences and quotation systems in modern Mongolian and Korean, examine the similarities and differences between the two languages, and thereby clarify some of each language’s unique quotation methods and the grammatical features associated with them. Furthermore, through the results of this analysis, this study aimed to provide basic data that would help language learners in both Korea and Mongolia to better understand quotation expressions frequently encountered in daily life and to use them appropriately.
