Abstract

A direct quote and an indirect quote can be distinguished with the mark of lako for the direction quotation and ko for the indirect quotation in modern Korean language. Yet, medieval Korean language, Mongolian and Manchu do not have such a mark that the quotation cannot be clear up. Nonetheless, medieval Korean language is required to use ha- in the quotation; Mongolian, ge-; and Manchu, se-, by which the quotation is easy to be distinguished. In case of speaking-style verbs used in such sentences, haya is taken for a quote form in medieval Korean language; gej in Mongolian; and seme in Manchu. Yet these three forms have a same feature structurally: Korean haya is a combination of the verb ha- and the linking word ending -ya; Mongol gej, the verb ge- and the linking word ending -j; and Manchu seme, the verb se- and the linking word ending -me. They function as one form in the quotation in order to be taken for its mark. The quotation in Korean, Mongolian and Manchu share a feature of the accusative subject along with the accusative word ending in case of the quoted sentence subject. The accusative word ending eul is taken for the quoted sentence subject in Korean; -g in Mongolian; and be in Manchu. Yet, the quoted sentence subject is used with the accusative form in Mongolian and Manchu. The quotation in Korean, Mongolian and Manchu has a common feature in syntax and meaning where the existence of the quote verb, the feature of the accusative subject and the function of the quote mark are of one accord.
