본고는 일견 서로 연계될 수 없는 것처럼 보이는 전통적 철학사상과 오늘날 현대사회를 다루고 있다. 이 두 가지 주제의 병론이 가능한 것은 삶의 조건에 따라 인간의 사고방식이나 생활양식도 변하게 마련이지만 그 가운데 불변하는 공통점이 존재하기 때문이다. 그것은 바로 인간은 반드시 자연 속에서 타인과 더불어 생활해야만 한다는 점이다. 바로 춘추전국시대를 살았던 맹자의 사상이 시공을 초월하여 '지금 여기'의 우리에게 의미 있는 이유인 것이다. 맹자는 당시에 지금의 우리와 마찬가지로 생태환경이나 인간소외 현상 등의 문제로 심각하게 고민하였다. 특히 유가철학의 궁극적 목적이 ‘현실에의 참여’에 있다는 점을 고려해 볼 때 이러한 문제들에 관한 논의에서 맹자사상을 한층 더 구체적인 파악할 수 있을 것이다. 이 논문에서는 자연과 인간, 사람과 사람, 개인과 내면의 관계를 중심으로 맹자의 사상적 체계를 재조명하는 한편 그것이 지니는 현대적 의의에 대해서도 재구명하고 있다.
Abstract
While facilitating the economic and social development of modern society, the highly developed modern science and technologies also trigger tensions between human beings and nature, human beings and their societies, and human beings and themselves. With the economic rising of East Asia and the deepening of globalization, western scholars once again turn their attention to the East, trying to find out the special route of modernization of East Asia and its cultural impetus. In fact, not only eastern philosophies provide cultural nourishment for the prosperity and development of East Asian societies, the traditional East Asian life wisdoms and philosophies may also provide new dimensions and inspirations for the healthy development of modern society. This paper interprets the modern implications of Mencius’ thoughts from aspects such as ecological awareness and ecological protection, tensions in interpersonal relationships and interpersonal communication, self-alienation and self-evolvement.
