The Relative Sophistication of Korea’s Export Products to China and Japan: An Analysis of So-called "Nutcracker" Situation

한국은 수출품의 품질 단계에 있어 국제적으로 비교적 뒤쳐진 순위에 속함에도 불구하고, 글로벌 시장의 성장과 자체적인 노력에 의해 수출의 엄청난 성장을 달성하였다. 본 연구는 변화-할당 (shift-share) 분석을 통해 한국의 수출 성과를 평가한다. 한국의 수출 성장은 다른 국가들에 비해 내부적 요인이 크게 작용한 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구는 한국의 수출 성장을 설명하기 위해 1994~2004년 사이의 수출 가격을 일본, 중국, 대만과 비교하였다. 1990년대 후반 한국의 수출품은 중국에 비해 1.5~2배 비쌌던 것으로 분석된다. 그러나 최근에는 한국 수출품의 가격이 중국 수출품의 1.2~1.4배 정도인 것으로 나타났다. 이는 중국의 수출품이 고급화 되면서 가격의 차이가 좁혀진 것으로 판단된다. 또한 한국의 수출품은 아직 일본 수출품의 품질을 따라잡지는 못한 것으로 분석된다.
