Abstract
We analyze the variety and within-product specialization in China’s exports to Korea by using the detailed data on Korean imports from 99 countries between 1992 and 2008. China’s exports growth to Korea is mainly driven by an increase in import penetration within common product categories with the rest of the world rather than by an increase in the number of product varieties exported. In addition, the similarity of China’s export bundle to that of OECD countries is higher than that of other developing countries. This implies that within-product specialization has been growing fast in China’s exports to Korea. Regression results show that the price of China's export good is lower even if we consider income level and economy size of the country. However, we can conjecture that the relative quality of China's export good has increased over time, since export quantity has increased rapidly compared to decrease of the price.
