이 논문은 1992년부터 2016년까지 25년간 중국의 165개 교역국에 대한 SITC 4단위의 세분화된 무역통계자료를 이용하여 중국 수출품의 가격과 품질 변화를 분석하고 있다. 기존 연구들은 단위가격을 품질 지표로 이용하고 있으나, 본 연구는 단위가격에 국가 간 거리와 1인당 소득 등의 변수를 고려하여 새롭게 품목별 품질을 추정하였다. 분석결과, 중국 수출품의 품질은 전반적으로 상승하고 있고, 농산품보다 공산품에서 품질향상이 더 뚜렷하게 나타나고 있다. 국가 그룹별로 살펴볼 때에도 어느 국가에 대해서나 수출품의 품질이 향상되어 왔다. 다만 저소득 국가보다는 고소득 국가로 더 좋은 품질의 제품이 수출되고 있다. 중력모형을 이용한 회귀분석 결과를 보면, 기존 연구와 마찬가지로 경제규모나 국가 간 거리는 무역량에 유의한 영향을 미치고 있지만, 수출품의 품질 변화가 무역량에 미치는 영향이 훨씬 크다. 중국이 수출 증가를 통해 지속적인 경제성장을 달성하기 위해서는 수출품의 품질 향상이 매우 중요함을 말해주고 있다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the changes in the price and quality of Chinese exports by using the SITC 4 digit trade data for 165 trading countries from 1992 to 2016. Previous studies have used unit price as a quality index, but this study have used new method for estimating the product quality by considering unit price, distance between countries, and income per capita. The results show that the quality of exported goods in China has been rising overall, and the quality improvement is more evident in manufactured products than in agricultural products. Moreover, the quality of exports has improved for any country, and better quality products are being exported to high-income countries rather than low-income countries. Regression analysis using the gravity model shows that the size of the economy and the distance between countries have a significant effect on trade volume as in the previous studies, but the impact of the product quality on trade volume is much greater. This study suggests that in order for China to achieve sustained economic growth through increased exports, it is important to improve the quality of export goods.
