Abstract
The world’s airplane market has been a duopoly of United States’ Boeing and European Airbus for many years. The first mover of Boeing developed the world’s first passenger airplane and opened the airplane market. The second entrant of the four members – France, Germany, United Kingdom, and Spain – of Airbus introduced a wide-body jet airplane, A300 in 1970’s. Until 2016, this duopoly of Boeing and Airbus has been sustained. But COMAC of China challenges the duopoly of world’s airplane market in 2017 via succeeding in developing narrow-body jet airplane of C919. Several factors make developing C919 possible. First, Transferring technologies from military side to commercial side played important role in development process. Second, Government’s supports that had been long-term and consistent disperse a development risk. Third, huge domestic air transportation market potential played a key role to ensure steady demand that were unprecedented in other countries’ development cases. Through developing C919, China can be a game-changer in the world’s airplane market. The point is changing positions from buyer to maker. This study suggests success factors of developing C919 in terms of late comers’ barriers to developing passenger airplane. China has overcome three kinds of barriers in that framework and tries to become the third global major. In conclusion, late movers that will develop a airplane can get useful and practical implications from this study.
