Abstract
For progressive intellects of the West, the issues of imperialism and colonialism brought many conflicts and controversies. Germany’s colonial rule did not go beyond the symbolic meaning of enhancing the nation’s honor and reputation instead of pursuing economic benefits. However, no other countries had as many disagreements and controversies on colonial rule within the national assembly as Germany, among the colonial powers of (neo-) imperialist era. Thus, Germany’s Social Democratic Party can provide good examples to examine the concerns and conflicts of Social Democrats toward imperialism. This paper analyzes the process of resistance, mediation, and compromise that the progressive idealism of German Social Democrats experienced as they faced the reality of world powers’ competition and the public aspiration toward colonies. Germany’s Social Democratic Party was not much interested in imperialism as it had been focusing on domestic politics until the 1880s, and could not have a firm stance on the issue of colonialism. This created various opinions. While the left wing of the Social Democratic Party strongly opposed colonial rule and imperialistic wars, the central wing and Revisionists argued for owning colonies and a more humane way of colonial management. Social Democrats who argued for colonial rule had an ideology that ‘owning colonies is a mission of a civilized nation,’ and accordingly a developed civilized nation had a duty to deliver civilization to undeveloped regions. In addition, they believed that having colonies would help increase productivity of an industrialized nation by supplying necessary raw materials from colonies. Through this, Social Democrats thought that they could have a smooth transformation to socialism on the basis of a much advanced industrialized nation. As a result, the revisionist trend became the general tendency within Germany’s Social Democratic Party, and thus the left wing’s principled rejection toward colonial rule in the part lost its power. Although the German Assembly approved the recruitment for the imperialist war and entered the First World War (1914-1918), but its defeat in the war made Germany give up on all of its colonies. As soon as Social Democrats clarified their position on imperialism, Germany lost its realistic possibility of owning colonies.
