이 연구는 1차 대전 이후 제국주의, 이성중심주의, 물질주의, 그리고 무엇보다 서구 문명을 인류 보편의 문명으로 간주하는 서구중심주의에 대한 사상적 대안으로부상한 문화주의가 식민지 조선에서 어떻게 변용되었는 지를 분석하고 있다. 문화주의는 독일에서 구성된 문화(kultur) 개념을 근간으로 하며 계몽주의적 문명화를 가리키는 문화(culture) 개념과 대척해 있다. 그러나 식민지 조선에서 문화주의는 문명화론이었으며 그것이 가진 진보성, 반식민주의적 저항성, 문화적 및 민족적 특수성에 대한 지향을 상실하면서 무력화되었다. 문화적 민족주의는 무력화한 문화주의의 한 樣相으로 볼 수 있는 것이다. 이 연구는 문화주의의 변용과 식민지적 전유에개입한 5가지 요인을 구분하는데 일본문화주의 영향하에 인격주의적 개조주의가 주도하는 식민지적 맥락, 강대국에 의존한 민족주의-서구중심주의, 구한말 이래 근대주의와 쌍을 이루어 正典化한 문명화론, 문화를 사회의 하위영역으로 주변화한 사회주의, 그리고 문화를 假想의 영역으로 무력화한 문화정치의 문화주의가 그것이다. 이 요인들에 의한 문화주의의 변용에서 문제적인 것은 식민주의에 대한 저항의 視點이 흐릿해 진 것만은 아니다. 현재의 시점에서 보면 쿠르트르 문화주의가 해체의 대상으로 설정했던 서구중심주의와 근대주의, 물질문명주의의 과잉, 기계적 과학주의, 도시주의 같은 생활방식과 가치체제를 20세기 초에 비판적으로 성찰할 수 있는기회를 갖지 못한 것도 포함된다.
Abstract
This study inquires into how the Culturalism of the early twentieth centuryhad been re-arranged in colonial Korea ever since it was introduced after theMarch First Movement. Culturalism was based on the concept of kultur whichwas invented as an alternative to the Western Enlightenment thoughts andFrench cultural hegemony over the West and the rest of the world. In Germanperspective, the Western civilization is doomed to be failed by its logo-centricrationalism, materialism, anti-naturalism, imperialism driven by destructivecompetition over the colonies and the West-centered universalization which triesto assimilate non-western cultures of colonies into the westernized civilizationand culture. In this terms, kulturalism could be accepted as an alternative andliberal thought to the Western civilization and imperialism since after the endof the World War First. In colonial Korea, culture means civilization and thenculturalism was understood and appropriated as a self-reconstruction-ism in adirection to get civilized. Addition to this, dependent nationalism on the Westpowers, Socialism, and cultural-politics of Governor-in-General in 1920scontributed together to blur the anti-colonial implications of kulturalism and tomake cultural practices and activities as powerless 'fiction'. I argue thatculturalism in colonial Korea lost its anti-colonial perspective by desiring forcivilization's universality instead of pursuing for cultural distinctions andparticularities which express intellectual, aesthetic, moral and spiritual qualitiesof a society, nation, ethnic and group. In conclusion, I suggest kulturalismwould have been a rare chance for us to reflect on the West-centerednesswhich has possessed Koreans ever since the late 19th century. I meanre-arranged civilizational culturalism in 1920s has weakened the de-colonialand post-colonial potentiality of the kulturalism itself.
