Abstract
Since the medical science has been developing, Human Immunodeficinecy Virus (HIV) infection has become from acute infectious disease to manageable chronic disease and survival duration also has been elongated rapidly. Recent clinical studies show that HIV is transmitted by sexual contact, vertical transmission, or exposure to body fluids but not by feces, nasal secretion, saliva, sputum, or urine. However, HIV stigma exists around the world in a variety of ways, including ostracism, discrimination and avoidance of HIV infected people, which has becomes social problems. Since 1990, there are only four instances related to possible transmission of HIV from healthcare workers (HCWs) to one or more patients. Even though the risk of transmission from HCWs to patients was extremely low especially when the universal precautions already in place are followed, there is a concern related to HIV-infected HCWs to perform daily practice or major surgery. The first instance of transmission of HIV from an HIV-infected HCW to patients was the driving force for the creation of guidelines and recommendations and many Western countries as well as some Asian countries already passed laws or recommended guidelines of performing clinical procedures of HIV-infected HCWs, which is not implemented in Korea until now. This article provides a broad summary of the current regulations or guidelines of HIV-infected HCWs for performing clinical procedures from exposure prone procedures to ordinary treatment to protect patients from the risk of infection. They also deal with how to make a balance between patients’ right to know the health condition of attending HCWs. I think that this article could be helpful for upcoming legislations in our country in near future.
