수신 교과서 『부녀감(婦女鑑)』의 텍스트성 －일본 근대 전환기 여성 표상의 다양성－

본고에서는 메이지 초기 간행된 『부녀감(婦女鑑)』에 내포된 표상 세계의 가능성에 관해 논의해 보았다. 우선 『부녀감』의 위상을 에도시대에서 메이지 초기에 간행된 열전형식의 여자 수신 교과서와 비교해 검토했다. 그리고 편찬고본의 변천을 살피고 그 과정에서 갖게 된 예화 구성의 특징을 고찰했다. 그 결과 『부녀감』은 애초의 기획과 다르게 덕목 구성을 파기하였고, 또 서양 인물의 인용이 많은 점을 알 수 있었다. 이는 당시 개정교육령 이후 유교주의 도덕교육의 부활이라는 시대상과 관련해 생각해 볼 때 상당히 특수한 경우라 할 수 있다. 『부녀감』이 궁내성 발간 교과서였기 때문에 내용 구성에 있어서 자유로웠을 수도 있다. 그러나 『부녀감』의 ‘이질적인 텍스트성’은 예화에 내포된 자발적 독해 영역과 관련해 주목을 요한다. 당시 일본 내셔널리즘의 자장을 벗어나 해석 가능한 표상 체계를 함의하고 있기 때문이다. 『부녀감』은 기존 연구에서 평가한 것처럼 유교주의 덕목에 매몰된 형태도 아니고 양처현모 사상에 전적으로 수렴되는 교과서도 아니다. 이는 『부녀감』 속 예화를 보다 정치하게 검토할 필요성뿐 아니라, 『부녀감』의 세계관을 다양한 표상 체계로 연결해 볼 가치가 있음을 역설한다. 뿐만 아니라 여학교의 교재로 폭넓게 사용된 『부녀감』은 당시 교육 기회가 확대되던 여성들의 세계관 형성에도 영향을 미쳤다. 단순한 덕목의 학습에 머무는 것이 아니라 대륙을 횡단하는 여성들의 이동 등, 일본을 넘어 세계로 향한 여성들의 시선을 인도하고 그들의 성취를 보여줌으로써 주체적인 삶을 꿈꾸게 하는 재료가 되었을 것이다.
Abstract
This paper discusses the possibility of the representative world contained in Hujokagami. First, the phase of Hujokagami was examined in comparison with the women’s morals textbook published from the Edo period to the early Meiji period. Then, I investigated the changes in the compilation of the draft and considered the characteristics of the example story composition brought about in the process. As a result, this paper clarifies that unlike the original project, Hujokagami abandoned the composition of virtues and cited many Western figures. This is a very special case compared to the trend of the times, such as the revival and strengthening of moral education based on Confucianism after the revised Education Ordinance at that time. Hujokagami may have been more free in the composition of the contents because of the textbooks published by the Imperial Household Ministry. However, the “unique textuality” of Hujokagami opened up the spontaneous reading comprehension area contained in the example stories. It contains an interpretable representational world that transcends Japanese nationalism at that time. Hujokagami is not buried in the Confucian virtue as evaluated in the previous studies, nor is it a textbook that is completely converged on Good Wife & Wise Motherhood. This emphasizes not only the need to examine the example stories of Hujokagami in more detail, but also the possibility of rereading this book by connecting it to various representational systems. In addition, along with the expansion of educational opportunities for women, Hujokagami which was widely used as a teaching material for women's schools, also influenced women's view of the world at that time. It was not just about learning virtues, but also a material that turned the eyes of Japanese women to the world through the movement of women across continents and anecdotes of their fulfillment, and also made them dream of an independent life.
