Abstract

The triumphs of Louis XII and Charles V in the Italian Wars played an important role in the development of the modern triumph and the birth of the modern concept of power. Along with the renaissance of antiquity during the Renaissance, ancient triumphs were revived. The monarchs of Italian city-states used this triumph politically to promote their power and glory. However, their triumph did not fully embody the Roman 'imperial and military' triumph. This was made possible by the triumphs of foreign monarchs, especially Louis XII and Charles V during the Italian Wars. At the beginning of the Italian War, as France won the war, Louis XII held several triumphs in Genoa and Milan. In the latter days, Charles V of the Holy Roman Empire held a triumphs. In their triumphs, Louis XII and Charles V were compared to the Roman Caesar, or Jupiter or Mars, and triumphal chariots and triumphal arches imitating the Roman triumph appeared. Neoplatonism, Vitruvius Aesthetics, and the idea of magnificence, which were popular at the time, were emphasized. Above all, the concept of ‘imperium’ in Rome was introduced in their triumphs, which justified the powerful kingship in the early modern period. The imperium expressed in the triumphs of Louis XII and Charles V contributed to the birth of Jean Bodin's concept of 'sovereignty'. Finally these triumphs can be seen as 'artistic expressions of sovereignty'.
