Abstract
This article analyzes Shin Hudam’s (愼後聃, 1702–1761) evaluation of Mohist thought as presented in his Palgachongpyeong (八家摠評 General Critiques from Eight Schools) and examines the characteristics of Mohist Studies in the Joseon Period. Shin offers a logical critique of Mohist doctrines, particularly Impartial Love (兼愛) and Thrift in Expenditure (節用), while systematically organizing the origins and historical development of Mohism. His approach differs from conventional dismissals of Mohism, which often echoed Mencius’ rejection of heterodox teachings without in-depth analysis. Unlike the fragmented and cursory treatments of Mohism typical in Joseon scholarship, Shin develops a more comprehensive discussion through three key treatises: “Discussion on Mozi,” “Mohist Origins and Development,” and “Discourse on Mohism and Buddhism.” He argues that Mozi’s focus on impartial love and thrift reflects an excessive attachment to partial aspects, leading to logical inconsistencies influenced by external causes. Extending his critique of Mohism, Shin also highlights similar issues in Buddhism—a common trend in Joseon critiques of heterodoxy, which later extends to a critique of Western Learning. Shin examines the origins and transformation of Mohist Thought, arguing that while Mozi originally pursued benevolence (仁) and righteousness (義), his ideas eventually became one-sided and imbalanced. He reaffirms Mencius’ critique while also highlighting that early Mohism shared certain Confucian values, emphasizing that Mencius’ criticism was not merely polemical but a scholarly response aimed at preserving Confucian order. While grounded in his conviction regarding the superiority of Confucianism, Shin’s tolerant stance toward Mohism exemplifies how Joseon scholars could engage academically with the Hundred Schools of Thought. His in-depth discussion of Mohism thus serves as a foundational contribution to the expansion of the Hundred Schools Studies in the Joseon Period and suggests connections to contemporary scholarly discourse.
