이 연구는 관료제와 관료를 이해하는 개념으로 ‘나르시시즘’이라는 병리학적인 용어의 적용가능성에 대해 탐색하고자 하는 시도이다. 나르시시즘은 과대자기, 자신의 외부에 대한 무시, 대상에 대한 변별 능력 결여, 분노와 공격성, 자기혐오, 치료에 대한 저항, 특권의식 등의 요소들을 포함하고 있다. 이 연구는 막스 베버의 고전적 논의에 기대어 관료의 지위, 자격, 위상이 이와 같은 나르시시즘의 조건이 되고 있다는 점을 밝히고 있다. 이어 구체적으로 관료의 나르시시즘이 어떠한 양상으로 발현될 수 있고, 되고 있는지를 논의하였다. 이와 같이 새로운 개념으로, 새로운 각도에서 관료제를 이해하려는 시도는 필연적으로 여러 가지 쟁점을 함께 제기하게 된다. 따라서 이 연구는 논의의 과정에서 제기된 쟁점을 정리하고, 이를 바탕으로 앞으로 이 연구가 풀어야 할 문제들이 무엇인지를 확인하고자 했다. 이러한 시도를 통해 이 연구는 관료의 나르시시즘이라는 개념의 이론적 가능성을 검토하고, 토론할 수 있는 근거를 제공하고자 하였다.
Abstract
This study is an attempt to see the applicability of the pathological concept of ‘narcissism’ in our study of the bureaucracy and bureaucrats. Narcissism is usually defined by symptoms such as self-aggrandization, self-absorption to the degree of neglecting an external world beyond oneself, inability to differentiate others, anger and aggression, self-loathing, resistance to treatment, and the sense of privilege. In fact, my exploration of none other than Max Weber's classic discussion of bureaucracy shows that the status, qualifications, and the social position of a bureaucrat satisfy the condition of narcissism. Upon this disclosure, I press on to discuss how this narcissism of the bureaucrat could be and has had actually expressed and operated. This new perspective on bureaucracy based on the concept of narcissism also raises a number of new issues. Therefore, I seek to summarize the issues already raised while identifying questions for a future development. Providing a platform for discussion and examining the theoretical possibility of introducing this concept of narcissism in the study of bureaucracy are my aims.
