Abstract

Regional innovation systemhas becomea mantra among economic development scholars and professionals alike. The creation and dissemination of new knowledge is a critical elementfor the sustainable development, particularly in the new economy. Therefore,it is imperative to understand the innovation process froma systematic perspective that includesfirms, governments, institutions, as well as environmental factors surrounding them.In particular, this study discusses early ideas of innoation system developed by Marshall and Neo-Marshallians. Itcovers the basic concepts of national and regional innovation system and their implications. The study also examines the elements of the regional innovation system and the current research trend.
