Abstract

This study investigates how the presidents in South Korea strategicallyutilized linguistic symbols in response to crisis or opportunities which tookplace during their incumbency. Drawing on official texts of speeches astextual data for analysis, we conducted thematic analysis and contentsanalysis consecutively to empirically categorize the types and measurefrequencies of the symbols that were used to convey images of legitimacyto the public. As a result, we found that there are four representative typesof symbols such as self-praising, other-praising, acceptance, and imposing, and the frequencies of their use are correlated with the change of approvalrating. Although linguistic symbols have been regarded as one of thesignificant tools that might be used by the president to manage the public, empirical evidence was few. Thus, this study seeks to generate attention tosymbolic aspect of presidency in public administration context.
